We're Bananas for Diversity!

All banana plants grow bananas, but not all bananas are edible

We divide banana plants into two categories: those that produce edible, seedless bananas and others that produce non-edible, seeded bananas, also known as ornamental bananas.

Ornamental bananas contain hard, pea-sized seeds. Some varieties are OK to eat, but you'll never be able to sink your teeth into them like your grocery store varieties.

Edible, seedless bananas

The banana plant species that produce the bananas you can find at most grocery stores are the Dwarf Cavendish and Gran Nain varieties.

There are many varieties that produce edible bananas with diverse flavors, sizes and textures, including Dwarf Orinoco, Blue Java (Ice Cream), Goldfinger, Sweetheart, Popoulu (Red Trunk), Dwarf Namwa (Pisang Awak), Tropicana, Veinte Cohol, Truly Tiny and so forth.

What is a baby plant?

Wellspring Gardens is the starter plant, AKA “baby plant” shop. We just get you started, so you get all the credit for raising your plants under your green thumb.

How tall are baby plants?

We aim to ship your plants when they’re 3-8” tall, though we often ship them taller than that.

What determines whether I get a 3-, 6-, or even 18-inch-tall plant?

The exact size of the plant we send you is variable on the time of year and how long we've been growing it out.

  • Size: Shipped at a height of 3-8 inches, ready to grow

Nourish Your Baby Banana Plants with Banana Fuel Fertilizer

Wellspring Gardens' Banana Fuel Fertilizer isn't just any fertilizer – it's a custom blend designed specifically for your baby banana plants. Our formula includes a balanced ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), the three primary macronutrients that plants need to thrive. But that's not all.

Banana Fuel also contains essential intermediate nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, as well as a host of micronutrients. Together, these elements work to stimulate strong and healthy growth, helping your baby banana plant reach its full potential.

Moreover, plants also need carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, which they naturally get from air and water. When combined with optimal sunlight and watering practices, Banana Fuel offers the ideal nutrition profile for your banana plants.

The banana didn’t have a good established root system and it wilted not too long after I got it. I have 14 banana plants and this is the only one I have had to die.UPDATEAfter I wrote my review above the seller reached out to me and asked if I wanted another try with the banana. Of course I said yes. They sent me the cutest little banana which is in the picture above. I have had it now for a little over two weeks and just got an another pup on it. Even though I was past my 30 day mark they made it right and I really appreciate it. This little baby is now the pride of my banana collection and it is only about 4 inches tall. I have it sitting in the pot with my Blue Java banana and I love when people come over and ask me if it’s a pup and their faces when I say it’s not is just perfect. Thank you again.

I had really high Hopes for this plant...2 leaves died in the first 2 or 3 days. When the size did not increase and the growth rate of new leaves showed a lack of health I knew it was a wrap. Roots were dead in the dirt! So disappointed!

One would think that only the product matters, but with plant material and living in California, you become painfully aware of all the regulations around the dirt, roots, fruits, species, and sources. It's actually extremely important to find a vendor who goes through the hassle of obtaining certificates to state they're free of all maladies in question. And then renews them on schedule. Hats off, it's an expense they took on to ensure they can reach all potential customers and satisfy USDA.As for the little Orinoco, it was delivered LIGHTNING fast. It felt like it was overnight. DANG! Absolutely no damage to anything, well packaged, safe and sound. 5 healthy as heck leaves, happy roots. It's now in a 2-gal pot in a standard potting soil, sitting in the orchid room to avoid the potential of shipping and relocation shock. Thankfully, spring is right around the corner, and I'll be able to kick it out on the porch to enjoy some sun and get used to our climate zone.Thank you for the great product and going an extra mile to deliver it :)

The plant was a little smaller than I was expecting. But it came early and was very healthy. No damage. It is green and doing well. Looks like I will up pot soon.. The weather is very cold for now. So I am keeping it in my windows with the most sun. Hopefully it makes it through the winter.

I bought three different plants, two out of three are flourishing, passion fruit, barbados cherry are doing excellent! The banana tree not so much, maybe it was because of the cold weather, I’d like to order again in warmer weather, but beautiful growth for other two!
