About this item

  • Kevlar and lightweight rosin material
  • Brilliant overtones
  • Quick response
  • Excellent pitch stability and intonation
  • Powerful projection

Fibracell reeds deliver vibrant tone with great longevity. They have brilliant overtones for a full, resonant tone, a quick response for better articulation, and excellent pitch stability and intonation, even for clarinet. Best of all, they have the same woody tone as cane but with better projection. Fibracell reeds even have the same weight and stiffness as cane (cane floats and so does Fibracell!) but they last up to 4 times longer with no unplayable reeds and aren't affected by heat or humidity. With their high strength and long-lasting durability, they're less likely to give out on you in the middle of a performance, too. What is Fibracell Fibracell is a sophisticated composite of aerospace materials designed to exactly duplicate the way nature constructs the cane that goes into the very best cane reeds. Very stiff but sound-absorbing Kevlar fibers are suspended in a lightweight rosin using extremely exacting production standards. Each reed is precisely machined and trimmed for a consistently perfect shape, so you get the same reed time and time again.

I’ve switched to synthetic on all the single reeds. I find that I prefer the Legere on saxes and soprano clarinet, but I haven’t found anything that I like better the. Fibracell on bass clarinet. These are reliable, consistent, and long lasting. No more jars of water, no more flattening, sanding or balancing. And they are always ready to play, which is a huge benefit with doubling.

Been playing clarinets of one register or another since about 1998. Once introduced to synthetic reeds in about 2008, I switched to synthetic without turning up my nose :). I fill in sometimes for a college wind symphony, and sometimes get the music and bass, contrabass, or contra-alto clarinet less than a week prior to performance--little/no time to break in reeds! But even for my regular-use soprano, I love synthetic. I just have to remember to buy a half-strength lower than I would for cane :)That said, I love the look and feel of my Fibracells. I use them when playing soprano and bass clarinets. Even my lips can't tell the difference because this brand actually tried to mimic the texture of the reed fibers--there is something about that texture that I prefer over smooth synthetics of other brands.Only problem is the Fibracells have some plastic laminate layer on the side facing the instrument that can separate somewhat from the rest of the reed. When that happens, at best, that makes a buzzing noise as you blow. Or at worst, the plastic can basically plug the airflow into the mouthpiece and prevent you from getting a note out. I had that happen during a performance. Took me a while to diagnose it since I was also on a borrowed instrument, and thought it had a loose screw or a worn cork. I had to mime through the rest of the concert and sort it out later. I have only experienced this issue to this extent with the bass clarinet reeds, and I do wonder if it has to do with the frequencies played on that vs. my soprano. So my review for the soprano Fibracells will be more favorable.Still, the con there is that the Fibracells have some layered material that can peel or slide apart vs. other synthetics I've tried that are one piece of molded material. To be fair, though, I still got about 3-4 times the use out of that Fibracell bass clarinet reeds, for about half the cost of the cane reeds I would have otherwise used.I have not had quite the same problem with this brand's soprano clarinet reeds. I can see the thin plastic layer has slid maybe half a mm down relative to the "cane", but that's after a few years of on-and-off use, and has not affected my sound on that instrument. So I find it hard to turn down Fibracell overall--I do still find myself coming back for more.

Very happy with this reed! It is great for outdoor performances; no worries on the reed drying out!

I cannot see any indication on the website but this it is a bass clarinet reed, not a reed for soprano clarinets.
