I live in a pier and beam old Victorian home with skirting that is a little too airy for what Texas winters have turned into. The plumbing for the most part runs along the north section of the house. I bought the 160ft length of this self regulating heat cable and installed it on about 95% of the 1/2†copper pipes. I used the straight along the bottom method and in areas that I doubled back on 4 and 8 o’clock. The good: This cable works! It will help keep your pipes from freezing! The bad: It was hard to do, it’s not as flexible as the picture makes it look, you can not kink it, and the spiral method requires it to be insulated and use a fiberglass tape that is special order only. It also only has a six foot plug in cable and it does not allow you to use an extension cord.Yes I recommend it, but consider where you are installing it.

Has kept hose from freezing down to 0 Fahrenheit I conjunction with pipe insulating foam. No issues with a few hundred hours of use.

Heat tape works well for narrow pipes.I would not recommend for2" pipes (PVC's) since the tape is too narrow for larger pipes such as the 2" pipes.

I recommend straightening it out for a while. It was difficult to get around the pipe, wanted to curl

Read the installation instructions and cover with good pipe insulation& waterproof if outside. Nothing outside in the Deep South is protected against sub-freezing conditions (so numbnuts drip faucets all night instead, dangerously dropping water pressure!). This electric trace cable is a bit unwieldy and NOT very flexible, but can be easily installed with the recommended tape and common sense routing. FYI - Electric Trace is NOT ENOUGH. YOU MUST STILL INSULATE THE PIPE, FAUCET, JOINTS... AND PROTECT THE INSULATION FROM GETTING WET (if using fiberglass or ceramic). DO NOT USE STYROFOAM/FOAM INSULATION with any electric tracing - it's not code.

I live in a cold climate and our downspouts and the buried pipes would freeze each year, causing an unappreciated skating rink on my patio. These cables keep things clean and clear!

I needed this heater cable for a different use, so did not use as intended, but this gave me the opportunity to cut the cable apart. This cable is properly assembled with the braided lining connected to ground correctly, the wire inside the orange section is an appropriate guage, not like ultra cheap power cords which use as little wire as possible, and the wire appears to be full copper, not copper coated aluminium. It has no internal thermostat, so is always on, but self regulates to a temperature of about 32 degrees, only relevance is that when warm weather comes around it will still draw a small amount of power unless unplugged.

Used this heated wire in an abs sewer pipe that froze multiple time during the winter. Solved our problem. Ran one full winter so far.

I installed this from the outlet end of my sump discharge tube. If they had put a rounded endcap on the cable instead of a square flat one it would not have stopped at each of the hose barb couplings along the line and made me dig up 2 connection points to feed it along up to the foundation wall. Otherwise I think it was a good buy.
