This is by far the best purchase I’ve ever made on Amazon. Bought this for our 4 yr old for Xmas. This whole life cycle process has been absolutely amazing. We watched the caterpillars quickly increase in size and build/enclose themselves in their cocoons. Day 2 the caterpillars doubled in size! Every day we noticed changes. The steps/booklet that came with this is pretty accurate on timing.. it says after 7-10 days the caterpillars will climb to the top of the cup and attach themselves to the underside of the lid. And they did around day 8. We only lost one caterpillar out of 10… it grew but never climbed to the top and died. After each caterpillar attached to the lid, we waited 3 days before taking the lid off and placing them on the holding log. It says butterflies will emerge in 7-10 days… our first 2 emerged one day early! Today is day 7 and we have 5 butterflies! I would suggest if you have cats to find a safe place that the enclosure cannot be disturbed. My cat knocked it off the table and this caused 2 cocoons to detach from the lid, but no worries because the booklet tells you if they fall off to gently scoop it up with a spoon and place on a piece of paper towel. I’ll try to update once all have emerged!No doubts, just buy this! Come spring I will be ordering more caterpillars to do again because this has been a great learning experience for my little (and me!) never too old to enjoy!**update 01/19/23All butterflies have emerged! Bought for 7 year old grandson’s birthday. He loved watching the stages. Will wait a year or so and purchase it again for him. His entire family loved it.

Bought this for our Granddaughters 9th birthday. She took ownership of the project and was a very attentive butterfly keeper.

We bought this as a Christmas present for our kindergarten-aged granddaughter. What comes in the box is the hanging mesh cage in which to place the caterpillars that will eventually turn into butterflies, and a certificate to mail away for the live caterpillars to place in the cage. Her parents just sent for the caterpillars a few days ago, so we do not have results (except to say that her pre-school teacher had one in the classroom that worked very well). She will be able to observe the cycle from caterpillar to butterfly up close, and release the live butterflies into the wild at the proper time. The cage itself is reusable, and there are directions about how to obtain new batches of caterpillars in the future. Our granddaughter had especially asked for this, and is very excited to have one for her very own. One precaution : there are apparently at least two sizes. While it is not too huge, the one we bought is the large size. The one that her teacher had is about half the size of the one we purchased, so if your space is limited, be sure to check to see which size you are getting.

Just to let you know you will be paying an extra fee about ten dollars for the caterpillar shipping after you fill out the online voucher form. Is this worth $31.49 plus $9.95, total of $41.44? Two people I know bought from another company and only paid 20$ at amazon for about 6 caterpillars plus the holder for the butterflies, etc. I couldn't find the brand they bought so I got this one. Yes, I know that you're supposed to get 6-10 caterpillars which is more than the amount they got for 20$(and same kind of caterpillars- painted lady) but you really don't need more caterpillars and if I order again, it won't be for this much money, 20$ only.

My kids love this (ages 5-12). We have it in three sizes. This size is their favorite. This is the second time I have gotten it for one of my children, she loves it that much. (The first one got caught in a wind storm and has a few holes, which doesn't keep all the critters inside.) After we hatch and release the butterflies it comes with, this pavilion is used for all sorts of critters. My kids put everything from flying insects to toads in the pavilion. If you want your kids outside exploring, this will help them have more fun!

We got this for Christmas and just received our caterpillars. It is absolutely unreal that we are doing this in our house. And really freaky too. These teeny, tiny caterpillars arrived in two cups, and they have seriously grown like 50 times their original size. They just started cocoon-ing today. One BIG TIP: don't order the caterpillars unless you have warm weather because 2-3 weeks after you receive the caterpillars, you have butterflies on your hands. And they need to be released!

I've bought this for my family and also as gifts, and it's always a hit! I also bought just the caterpillars several times and each time we've had six caterpillars that have all turned into beautiful butterflies. I would suggest that you purchase the caterpillars during the warm months so that you can eventually release them...more fun and celebratory that way. Once we got it during the winter months so had to keep the butterflies until they died. Nothing horribly tragic, but the kids were a little sad to see the butterflies pass away.
