Mil-Tec by Sturm Nickel Plated Boatswain Whistle
Bosnian whistle made of nickel-plated copper with anti-corrosion properties For easy carrying and storage, the whistle uses an O-Ring that allows the whistle to be hooked up. A boatswain's call, pipe or bosun's whistle is a pipe or a non-diaphragm type whistle used on naval ships by a boatswain. It is pronounced, and sometimes spelled, "bosun's call". The pipe consists of a narrow tube (the gun) which directs air over a metal sphere (the buoy) with a hole in the top. The player opens and closes the hand over the hole to change the pitch. The rest of the pipe consists of a "keel", a flat piece of metal beneath the gun that holds the call together, and the "shackle", a keyring that connects a long silver or brass chain that sits around the collar, when in ceremonial uniform.

I have purchased several Mil-Tec Sturm Nickel Plated Boatswain whistles over the last year on Amazon. For the money, these are a great buy when compared to other legitimate boatswain or bosun whistles/pipes--which can run from $30-60. The Mil-TECs are nice and loud, and do not need to be "tuned." A word of caution, however. There are a number of cheap knockoffs being passed off as Mil-Tec on the internet, including on Amazon. One earmark to watch for is the shape of the bowl. The Mil-Tec bowl is smooth and round. Some fakes are embossed and have flattened sides. I have included a photo of one that was sent to me a few days ago from a from a company on Amazon who were recommended as "Amazon's Choice." This vendor was advertising Mil-Tec pipes with the correct photo on their site, but the photo I have posted is what they sent. Basically a cheap pipe, knock-off that does not work.

We needed this for Captain von Trapp in Sound of Music. The actor could play it right away - so easy to use and the sound is nice and loud. Good, solid, quality piece.

Works well, very loud. The tube is not tapered at the bowl and you can hear the wind draft.

I bought this to teach my niece how to do basic calls and it very much fits the bill. It's easily tuneable with bends and solder, though I actually didn't have to do all that much out of the box. Beware the crappy brass ones that focus on how nice of a box they come in; they're lookers, not doers!

The end of the pipe is not in the position it is shown in the photo. It's too far back and barely makes any sound at all. Not useable.

I just got mine this morning and I have to say, I couldn't be happier. It's already tuned, loud and sounds GREAT. I'm glad I returned the other one and bought this one instead.

The looks and construction look nice, but that's where the positives stop. The end of the gun is right against the cutting edge of the buoy, and goes right over it. It will barely make a whistle with the strongest breath. I have tried to adjust it, but because it's literally against the bowl, there's no way to do much and get the cutting edge into the airflow without building it up with silver solder and re-doing it completely. If the bowl could be rotated a bit, then it might be fine, but as it is, this is a non-starter.
