Of all the devices similar, this took the cake because of pricing and bluetoothe capability. The other technology that requires a license (which is easy to get I hear) is supposedly more distance, but it turns out that this is just about as good. It's very attractive, a great little screen with great indicator lighting and information, nice usb c charger port, super easy buttons (but reading the instructions a must), the side buttons are super easy to use, very comfortable and intuitive for the hand. What a winner. The one thing hard to understand is why the bottom has such a small base. You can stand it up, but it has to be a nice flat surface, straight surface. Would be nice to have a big, flat base you could plunk down anywhere. But maybe there's a reason for the gap as well - maybe to hang on your pack? Haven't explored all the features - but use it often to communicate. Love it. Price was very good for what you get. Also nice is that the belt clip does not jut out very far, nice and flat. The antenna is very sturdy, all in all feels great in the hand and does the job much better than our other well known brand. LOVE that you can use lithium rechargeable included and AAs. Rechargeable AA lithiums could be used as well, just got some of those from EBL and so far, fantastic. With a little portable solar panel recharger, that would be pretty all-in-one. A+++ for sure! A full power recommend!

These stand on the same podium as our Rocky talkies. We where about 3 miles back into a deep mountain valley, our friends had a rocky talkie and another group had one of these and multiple times the two Motorolas where able to be heard vs the rocky talkies.Had these for about two years; one of them the battery is completely shot and holds no charge, replaced it with rechargeable batteries but they will not recharge via the charger port on the talkie. They could be louder, it’s hard to hear in high wind, or when you’re skiing/snowboarding. You often miss what’s being said when you’re in motion. The clips on the back are not strong either, they broke almost immediately and when they are in the cold the plastic stands no chance. Wish there was an alternative for mounting these to a person.Anyone can use these though, there is almost no learning curve, they fit right in your pocket like a cell phone and I will say overall these are worth the money.

To start with, I wanted to mention that I am a licensed ham radio operator. I state this fact not to impress you, but to convey the fact that I have better methods of communication at my disposable than a pair of FRS / GMRS radios. So why would I want this? Simple. Not everyone is licensed, and there may be times I may want to communicate with my spouse, or someone else in a more relaxed setting. Say hiking, camping etc.Disclaimer - The FCC requires a license to use the GMRS frequencies of this radio. What's this? The Motorola T800 comes with a total of 22 channels. These 22 channels are divided into FRS (Family Radio Service) channels 8-14 and GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) channels 1-7 and 15-22. No license is needed to operate the radio on the FRS channels. However, to be completely legal - and to use the higher power GMRS frequencies, the FCC will be more than happy to sell you a GMRS license for around $65 or so for a 10-year period. The good news is, that the GMRS license does not require the passing of any tests, it covers not only you, but also other members in your household. So, from that perspective, the license fee is not bad at all.Enough of the legalize - now onto the features of this radio. There are many FRS / GMRS radios available for sale all over the place, for a lot less money than this set. So, why spend the extra cash? Easy. These radios can transmit text and location data from a smartphone via a bluetooth connection to the radio. This feature is fairly new, and is great for hiking or other off-grid type situations where cell phone service may not be available. One simply has to download the Talkabout app from the respective app store for Android or iOS, sync ones mobile phone via bluetooth to the radio and create an account (optional). And the whole process is fairly straight-forward, as the app walks one through each step of the way. Note, the bluetooth functionality has to be turned-on first on the radio, before trying to connect it to ones mobile phone. The phone app can also be used to view individuals / group locations on a map, to record routes and track statistics, set boundaries, and control the radio settings. The overall radio range is going to be limited by terrain. The package states a range up to 35 miles mountain to valley communication, up to 6 miles over open water, and up to 2 miles in a neighborhood. Your mileage will vary.To me, the blue LCD display is easy to read. It dims and then disappears after 20 seconds or so, only blinking a tiny blue indicator and/or a flashing bluetooth symbol. This is done to conserve the battery. This radio is weather proof to IPX4 standards, but not completely water proof. In other words, in can get slightly wet provided all of the ports (battery cover, headphone cover) are sealed. It also includes a NOAA weather radio and a built-in flashlight (LED).Another great feature I really appreciate is the dual power option. These radios come with a rechargeable NiMH battery pack for each radio or can be powered by 3x AA batteries. A USB charger with y-adapter so both radios can be charged at the same time is also included in the box. You'll also get easy pairing (through a button on the side of the radio, or through the app), emergency alert function to alert other users on the same frequency, vibration alert, and hands-free VOX operation. In other words, these radios are feature packed! On top of that, Motorola has been producing radios for many years. You'll get great equipment, awesome features, at a great price. On top of that a 2-year warranty which is really outstanding!Yours truly highly recommends these radios if you want to go beyond the same 'ol FRS bubble pack radios you find at the big box stores. And one last thing...If your're interested in any type of emergency comms. I think a good set of FRS / GMRS radios fit right into the mix along with more sophisticated communications like ham radio. Plus, you can use these while just out having fun too.

Pros:Solid radios - good qualitySpace saving sturdy charging dockWork really well up to at least one mile - testing in suboptimal conditions: with one inside house - one inside moving vehicle (We bought them to use on an 90 acre plot of land, so really did not test them to work any further than we would need them to)Easy to learn how to operate even with no two-way radio experience (me)Great radio for experienced users (my partner)App easy to downlaod and installCons:Instructions a little confusing in places if you have no experienceApp a little clunky with no experience. I see some youtube videos that can walk you through stuff which I have not yet looked at but will. However, I wish the directions and app were user friendly enough that I did not need to do that.

My wife and I have been using them on a 50 acre off grid camp we have, I'm in the woods a lot cutting down the dead Tamarack trees and she likes to go for walks throughout the woods. These walkies get very clear and strong signal. Work great for our intended purposes.

I'll deduct a star because one of the two radios won't receive weather broadcast. Other than that these are VERY capable little radios. Was able to make contact 5km away while sitting in my vehicle (which degrades your transmissions vs standing outside of the vehicle) across a city. The receiving radio was 20' off the ground. That is what is special about these radios. You can elevate them and use the app to control them through a phone or tablet via Bluetooth. No other less than 2w radio has worked 5km for me as consistent as these.Thinking the ability to elevate them and use Bluetooth to listen and transmit with your phone is the greatest advantage of these radios. Also the text messaging is a great feature although I'm not sure it is actually legal for use in Canada because it exceeds the duration allowed for data transmission on frs/gmrs in Canada. The scanning function is also great as it decodes privacy tones of other users. It does scan pretty slow though. About 6 seconds to scan all 22 channels. When you register for the app I suggest not adding your phone number as it will broadcast it as part of the message which is weird. I reinstalled the app and created a new account and didn't use my phone number the second time. All in all pretty solid radios. Battery life could be improved but it also takes AA batteries so you could probably buy AA rechargeable nimh batteries with a higher mah rating and just charge them in a separate charger. Might even charge in the radio but I don't know. Will try that and if it works I will edit this.
