It's been a while, but I needed a Big Blue housing for a project. I didn't even know if they were still available, but a quick scan and up pops this Pentek - It's gotta be Pen Pure - right? Wow they're still selling them! Price is right, ordered one right up, couple days later, another Amazon box....When I saw "Pentair" on the label, I took a deep breath. Not made any better by the "Made in China" that followed. Oh-oh - this could be bad! Hmm.. looks pretty decent, No!, it's good!(Pentair is a huge industrial corporation, highly respected)I was in the commercial water treatment/RO business back in years ago, and the Pen Pure brand was well respected, as was their version of the standard Big Blue 4.5" (in 10 or 20") housing, often used as a prefilter for smaller commercial RO systems with a depth filter and a CBC to prep for a TFC membrane. That's what this is being used for, and I'm very happy to say, the quality is as good as they were back 20+ yrs ago. You can't say that about too many things that have aged that long and had their manufacture moved to China. I wish it was made in the US, but if it had, I doubt it would be sold at this price point. (We used to get a case of 4 for $99, and once in a while the wholesaler would throw in elements if you bought a few boxes) Small things tell you about quality, and how much a manufacturer cares about it. As always, I grabbed my silicone grease to lube the o-ring, and I also grease the threads lightly too to ease removal and prevent "plastic stick" which can be annoying on this size housing. Anyway, I opened it up and there was the o-ring (not in the groove, in the bowl - a good thing, so it doesn't take a set) and it was already lightly lubed up. A manufacturer that cares enough to do that cares about their product. Always, and still a Penn-Pure/Pentek/Pentair Big Blue customer. 5 stars across the board! Even "Flavor" - I assume they mean the water? That would depend more on the element than the housing, and raw water. One negative - No L bracket and screws with the housing. They used to come gratis, heck I had dozens of them floating around I didn't need, now think I can find one? Still giving five stars on "Ease of install" even though I should take one back, I figure these are available in 1" and 3/4" which saved me some grief. If you're listening, Amazon and Pentair, at least mark "bracket not included" and link one. They're not the same as a standard 10" x 2.5 one. The bolt pattern on a Big Blue is 3" x 3" with 4" to center to the bend - hope that helps someone out. (love that they kept the Imperial pattern) You can drill and tap 1/4npt for a gauge, and the original brackets are notched both sides to clear the bleeder and gauge (and allow 'flipping' if necessary)Bottom Line:These are a high quality housing at a fair price, and I highly recommend them.

I use this for a pre-filter and for recharging the water softener on my RV. Need the clear one to see when the salt is done for recharges. Very sturdy. Has plastic threads for in/out, but with them being 1", you just screw in a brass fitting and they are very secure. Really love the build quality of Pentair housings. Had normal big blues before and they were extremely durable. I do use a pressure regulator keeping the pressure at 50 psi or below, so I can't speak to whether the clear housing will take higher pressures...but these are pretty hefty and well built. Just don't leave the clear housing out in the sun...they are not UV resistant (per Pentair).

I like this housing. It fit well with my 3/4 pipe. It installed easily and it is water tight. I just wish it had a clear housing.I have changed the filter a few times now and it has come off with just my hands. I have not used the wrench for it yet. I lubricate the o ring with Vaseline before I reinstall it.I have not lost pressure in my house with 3 sinks, 2 outside faucets with auto watering system, 1 water softener, reverse osmosis system, 1 dishwasher, 1 refrigerator ice maker, 1 shower, 1 toilet, 1 washing machine, 40 gallon water heater. All my plumbing is on the first floor from the basement. Pentek 5005 Sediment filters will not loose pressure up to six months. I have not let a filter get any older than 6 months so I don't know how long it will be before you notice a pressure drop. You may be able to use them for a year, but I don't know if that is recommended. If you have two stories and an extra bathroom you will probably want the longer 20" filter. If you add two more housings, one with a small micron sediment filter(.5 or 1) and one with a carbon block filter(.5), you will have filtered water better than any Pur or Brita filter could ever produce. Plus it would be at all taps with normal water pressure.

I bought this as a backup to replace my current unit. Dealers want 350% higher price for a unit with a 3/8” NPT drain hole in the sump, so I drilled and tapped my own. Rather than $220, I got this unit for $65 and it took me 15 minutes to modify. I bought a stainless steel 3/8” MPT 1/4-turn drain valve for under $10. Now, no mess changing out filters!

So I read that these leak and are nothing but issues. But I couldn’t resist due to the price compared to other brands. I bought 6 of the 4.5x10” versions and figured people just weren’t really that knowledgeable on pluming. Let me tell you they definitely leak. The lower portion that holds the filter has a very small indent that’s supposed to hold the o-ring and the head unit where the o-ring seals against is not flat finished so the basic supplied o-ring really need to be squeezed super super tight inorder to get it to seal. Also the lip is not substantial enough to hold the o-ring in place so you must be very careful. One came with silicon grease so I applied it to all the orings to help hold them in place. even then you may find for the first few days it’s leak free to later find your basement floor covered in water because it decided to leak again. I’m going to try a silicone type o-ring (softer material) and see if it seals the imperfect surface better. The filter assembly is only rated for 75psi and 100psi max. My system is 55psi from the well and 75 psi from the internal pump. In order to tighten them I had one guy hold the fixture while I used a 30” ratchet to tighten it on TIGHT AS I COULD. As of now the leaks have stopped but I don’t trust it.Pro; definitely made of solid material and looks as though there’s a spot for a pressure gauge if you drill and tap it.

solid, only issue the O ring leaked, had no silicone lube, no instructions, (as if I needed it). Made my own holding plate and the undersized screws cracked the plastic on the lid, hum....so ordered other o rings and silicone lube and managed to have it work.

Pentair makes good quality products and this filter is no exception. Since its a standard size 10“ water filter there are a lot of filter cartridges that will fit this model. While it didn't come with a mounting bracket, i found the Rainfresh BH010-6 bracket was a perfect match. Additionally, the Rainfresh CK2 adapter kit allowed for a quick & simple connection to the copper piping i cut in.

These 10-inch Pentek enclosures are a perfect size for a whole house filter. It has 1" inlet/outlets but they are easily reduced down to 3/4" with a reducer or a bushing, if required. There is also a 3/4" inlet/outlet model but make sure that the prices are similar, because the price of this 1" model was much lower than 3/4" when I bought it.The filter housing itself is very well made and the pressure relief button on the top is key to "no mess" filter changes. You just have to make sure to not over-tighten the housing when you install it (see instructions) and you should be all set.By the way, this filter housing accepts 4.5x10" filters and if you only have one filter housing for your house, you can get dual-density filters for improved filtration. Search Amazon for Pentek DGD-5005 and Pentek DGD-2501. We're on a deep well and the finer DGD-2501 model lasts about a year before we notice the pressure drop. Pentek DGD-5005 is probably sufficient in most cases though and will minimize the need for filter changes.-------------If you found this review helpful, please let me know by clicking the "Helpful" button below.
