Attenuation is a critical part of recording and signal matching, ensuring that an overly "hot" signal won't hit the input of the device it's going into too hard. In short, attenuators are effective at avoiding unwanted distortion. An audio toolkit essential, the IMP Pad 40dB is also available in 10, 20, and 30dB attenuation versions. Bought 2 of these to record the master out of my mixer to the XLR stereo inputs on my Zoom H4N Pro. Converts the line level to mic level and works great. Getting some excellent quality recordings with these things.

You are better off attenuating in the analog domain, get the full dynamic range out of your DAC, and this inline pad seems to work fine. Whirlwind is a name I've relied on since the 80's.

Just used this at a large outdoor concert (7000 seating stadium). Connected the -40db pad between my Zoom H4N recorder and the main house mixer. I used a different -20 db pad on the left channel which seemed to clip a bit of the sound. The -40db gave a wider dynamic range when viewing the waveform in Adobe Audition. Sound was excellent.

I needed an attenuator to reduce the output of our sound board to mike level for our video camera. I am using this along with a second 35 dB attenuator with good results. I will probably buy a second pair of 20 dB to use with the 40 dB pair for a better match.
