These are just what I needed. I've been buying quality yarn lately, which is wound in a particular way. Getting them wound into a ball by hand would take me a couple hours because I had no way to stretch the skein out and it would get tangled. The umbrella swift is PERFECT for this and the ball winder makes the best little center pull cakes of yarn!I spent a good 10 hrs one night just winding yarn. Once you figure out how to get it onto the swift and work out all the little issues, it goes smoothly for the most part. I will say that sometimes, the thing to stretch the swift gets stuck and you have to work to get it to stretch out again but that's rare ans certainly not worth complaining about since it's saving me several hours a skein. This is a cheap enough set to try and see how you like it. I've got plans for the future to buy a 'nicer' quality set but this actually works well for my uses so until it falls apart completely, I'll be using it. I just wish the swift would open a little more. Oftentimes the skein is hanging pretty loosely when the swift is opened as far as it will go and that seems to make it want to tangle as you're unwinding it but again, it's a learning curve and once you figure that out, you can kind of watch for it and anticipate it happening. Both the swift and the ball winder turn smoothly and will run very quickly together. The only big problem I've had is that the ball winder is plastic and that makes for a slippery surface that the yarn is winding on. It's happened a couple times that suddenly, the entire cake of yarn just flies off the winder! The swift folds down to a pretty small size but the ball winder itself doesn't really compact in any way. But I've got places to stash them in my craft room and even if you don't, they'll both fit in a drawer or small box together. These were a great buy for me. They're saving me a ton of time on winding yarn and they make these adorable little perfect center-pull cakes of yarn. I was going to buy a really nice set made of wood. That set was almost $300. These are fine and because I didn't spend a whole lot on them, I've already gotten my money out of them and they're still going strong.

I've been using the knit picks winder for the last few years and it has been nothing but problems right out of the box. Constantly having to rewind balls because the tension drops or the angle shifts. It finally broke on me not too long ago and was irreparable, happily forcing me to buy a new one. The ball winder in this set is smooth as butter and very obviously more sturdy than the knit picks winder. I am so beyond happy to have finally got a new one.I didn't really need a skein holder. I have one of those wooden one, I think I paid $100 for it. It's pretty sturdy, however one of the spoke thingies did break but I repaired it and it's still usable. That being said, the skein holder in this set is definitely an upgrade. It's better quality and has more features to it. The adjusting handle for skein width is very useful as it's a quick clip and release design. There is a very nifty handle at the top that allows for quick manual skein winding if you need it (very useful if you do not have a niddy noddy). And I like that it comes with a case to store it in. The clamp that secures this skein holder to the table or counter is a bit tricky at first. When mine arrived it seemed almost unadjustable because the screw tension was so tight and so the parts were kind of stuck together, but I tried a little harder to loosen the screw part and from there it was very easy to use. It will take some getting used to.Overall I definitely recommend this set. You are getting great quality equipment for an absolute deal. Whether you are a beginner enthusiast or experienced professional this set is essential for fiber artists working with yarn.I was going to go with the more expensive wooden set that I've seen here on amazon, but am glad to have gone with this one instead. Great quality and stores much easier allowing more room for my yarn stash.Happy winding people, may your yarn never tangle!

The umbrella swift was a little confusing at first but I’d never used a ball winder and swift before. For a first timer, I feel this is a decent start for the price. I like that I can set up/take down easily.

These two are just great! I am using them all the time! If you are knitting using wool on skeins, I highly recommend these both, saving so much time for winding the yarn!

Just gotten back into knitting and found winding one hank into a ball for what seemed like an eternity wasn't cutting it, so I found this and it works great!Wish the spindle the yarn winds around came in other sizes, so if you've got a smaller amount of yarn you could chose one that fit better, but other than a bit of squeaking whilst winding, it works great. It's one of those things you don't use everyday but when you need to, it's just the tool for the job.
