This is a great ham radio for the go bag or hobbyists. In my opinion this is one of the easiest ham radios to learn and use. The build quality is great , battery lasts for a long time, charges fast via the type c port in the back of the battery and the range is pretty decent for the price. .

As my HT collection (addiction) approaches 30 radios, this one is good, but doesn't stand out as the "best bang for the buck" like the Baofeng 5RM/K5 Plus series. Also, I've been noticing a lot of AI generated reviews. This is not one of those...Things I like:1. The full color display. (better than the original UV-5R)2. Somewhat "splash proof".3. Good receive and transmit audio.4. USB-C charging. (a must have feature these days)5. Pre-programmed NOAA weather channels.6. CHIRP programming compatible.7. Comes with two antennas.8. Great form factor. (probably the best looking Baofeng yet, and feels great in the hand)9. Frequency capture and frequency copy feature.10. Standard "telephone style" keyboard. (with the zero key in the middle of the bottom row like it should be)Things I don't like:1. To my eyes, the display was a little too dim. (not quite as good as the 5RM/K5 Plus in my opinion)2. The button in the center of the up/down buttons that doesn't appear to serve any function. (gets pushed when using the up/down buttons and feels awkward)3. No aircraft band receive. (The 5RM/K5 Plus and many others in this price range have this feature)4. Standard 5 watt output. (The 5RM/K5 Plus have up to 9 watts output)5. The battery has a screw holding it on. (inconvenient and unnecessary for a non-waterproof radio)A few observations I have made that might not have been mentioned elsewhere:1. "One Touch Search" - I've noticed some confusion on what the actual function of the "one touch frequency search" button is. Note that this is not a typical "search" function where you can search for random activity within a certain frequency range from several miles away. (which the radio also has) Think of it as working more like a "frequency counter". It requires that another radio is within a few feet. This feature is referred to as "close call RF capture" on some police scanners . It will quickly display the frequency and PL tone (if present) on the screen. At that point you can talk to the other radio. You also have the option to store it in a memory channel as well. Remember, it will not work unless the other radio is less than about 20 feet away. (depends on how powerful the other radio is)2. "CHIRP Programming Software" - When using the CHIRP software, select "UV-17Pro" as the radio type.3. "USB-C AC Adapter" - If you want a good inexpensive USB-C "wall wart" to use with this radio, check out the MAILESI TPA-5950100U. (ASIN B088D4CNHV) It even comes in a 2-pack for when you buy two of these radios!Conclusion:This radio is actually closer to 4.5 stars and much better (in my opinion) than the original UV-5R in all aspects, so forget about that radio. LOL. The problem is, Baofeng makes the 5RM & K5 Plus for the same price, with higher output, bigger displays and Aircraft band receive. For some people, this radio may be the better choice due to it's form factor, great looks and the fact that it's "splash resistant". Some may not need higher power or aircraft band. There are a lot of players now in the "it's only $30 and I can't resist" price range. Too bad that this one isn't quite up to the value of the 5RM or K5 Plus. This radio is still a great value though, especially when compared to the original UV-5R. Too bad it gets overshadowed by a couple of overzealous members of it own family. LOL

I have had this radio for a couple weeks and here are my impressions. First off I took it a field day and it did a nice job. Hitting the local repeaters with the rubber duck. I received great audio reports. I prefer to use the 15 inch duck since the shorter antenna is marginal. I program the UV-21R with Chirp using the UV-17 pro download. This was recommended by the vendor site, and seems to work well. I’ve had a lot of success operating 220 with his radio making my first contacts ever and I’ve decided to convert one radio to a base station using a home brew 1/4 wave ground plane antenna. So I just ordered an orange one for my walk about. Build quality is high and all functions work good.Some pros I have noticed:Great speaker audio.Two pin mice plug is properly designed.USB C is a big plus.Radio selectivity is very good.Wish it had these:Ability to lock a channel in and out of scan.Better base for standing on a table.Nice job Baofeng, I may have to try the green one :)73, from General operator Tim.

It's difficult to get the HT to stand up by itself, but the USB-C was a selling point for me. Works well, sounds great, easily programmed by both CHIRP and manually.

I got this when I found out it was USB-C charge-able and also tri-band. The 21R allows for slightly longer naming of the memory channels and Chirp's latest software release supports it via the 17R Pro configurtation. I like the display and the sound is good on speaker or via headset (same Kenwood plug as other Beofeng's). The antennas connected work well, however I tend to use the 771 antenna rather than the shorter one. Also, this has 999 memory channels and I have no idea how I'll organize them, but doubt I'll ever use more than a couple hundred with emergency and response frequencies. My net check-ins indicate good voice quality using simplex or repeater connection.

Purchased these radios with the intention of using them on 220MHz. The radios are extremely easy to program with their CPS, their front speaker is loud and clear and out of the 3 I bought, I have given 2 away to new 220MHz operators and they love it! Purchasing a few more to spread the hobby.
