These take a little bit of time to set up, but it is so worth it. I bought them to use while hunting and they were so much better than using walkie talkies. The reception is so much better with these and they are the same price if not cheaper than some walkie talkies. I thought they worked so well that I bought another set for my Dad for his birthday. The fact that I can use them to listen to the radio too, is a nice bonus.

I’ve been buying baofengs as a consumable item for awhile. You get what you pay for so don’t expect a wicked good quality, but you will have radios that work and are cheaper than GMRS radios you’d get a sportsman store, especially when you count all the extras.You will need a license to transmit legally, but, it’s always legal to own and listen. Programming a basic frequency is super easy, adding and saving channels can be complex and requires a lot of button presses so use chirp on a pc to add repeaters etc.Range is HIGHLY dependent on frequency choice and local environment, if you’re on apposing sides of a valley, you’ll get miles of range, 3-5 miles is no problem for these. If you’re in a dense urban environment, you could easily get the range down to less than a city block, power level is acceptable and accurate, assuming the right frequency (vhf/uhf have different max outputs) usually 4-8 watts depending on choice.Overall, it’s a multipack, pick your poison, there’s lots of other options, but they really all offer the same radio. Some may be marginally better or worse, but that’s partially luck of the draw. They’ve been making these radios for at least a decade and they’re selling them less than what a DoorDashed meal costs so quality control is, less than ideal but I’ve bought 20 of them from various sellers since 2016 and if you take care of them they’ll last just fine but it doesn’t sting if it does kick the bucket.Main difference I’ve noticed matters with these radios : Battery efficiency (usually a factor of settings and duty cycle but I’m focusing on standby time):VSWR for antenna and radio frequency shift/drift. The signals coming out of these is dirty even on a good model. Better antenna helps, but you’re not going to achieve what the radios that cost 4-5x as much. Will you be able to talk and be heard assuming conditions are viable? Definitely.I’ve used mine in dense environments like heavily wooded or downtown large city environments, I’ve used them for sport, hobby, etc for years. I highly recommend every American have at least one of these and the knowledge to use it properly.GET A GMRS LICENSE! ITS $35 and there is no testing like ham radio. Your license covers all immediate family members so only one license needed per household. Ham radio license opens up way more frequencies and should be considered but GMRS/FRS is the fastest and easiest legal way to use these radios.Cheap modifications and upgrades: Make a counterpoise with a terminal and length of wire (use website to calculate length for frequencies desired) attach it to a belt clip screw. (Pictured red wire) It makes a massive difference, brought VSWR numbers down from 3:1 to 1:1For the price 10/10As far as radios are concerned, 6/10 compared to proper ham equipment 2-3x the price of those kit.

These are great radios to have on hand for emergencies. I have purchased several of them, as once charged, I can use them for several days in an emergency where news is difficult to get otherwise.

As a ham, I really appreciate the affordability of these radios. They are a little confusing to program, but the secret is to set up all of the settings the way you want for that channel, then delete the channel before you add the channel. This is annoying and not clear in the instructions, but it does serve to avoid channels being overwritten accidentally.
