How to Use:

  1. Identify the original thread size from the old sump plug.
  2. Select the next size up tap. Example: 12 mm original plug diameter, use 13 mm tap.
  3. Fill the flutes of the tap with clean axle/bearing grease.
  4. Use an appropriate driver to screw the tap into the sump hole.
  5. Once the tap has started to cut continue to slowly cut the thread by rotating clockwise by ½ turn and back (anti-clockwise) a ¼ of a turn, this will help give a good full thread.
  6. Once the thread has been fully cut, remove the tap and clean.
  7. Pour engine oil through the engine with the sump plug out to wash out any metal fragments that may have dropped into the engine.
  8. Fit the appropriate new sump plug and copper sealing washer and torque to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification.

Attention:

  1. Taps must be well lubricated during use to ensure a quality thread is cut, and the teeth do not bind. It is recommended the flutes of the taps be filled with grease to assist both in lubrication and help remove the metal fragments as the tap cuts the new thread.
  2. It is recommended the sump be washed out to ensure all metal fragments have been removed. If there is any doubt that there may be metal fragments in the sump pan, then the sump must be removed for cleaning.
  3. When running the engine, make sure there is enough ventilation and extraction of exhaust gases.

I had a used ATV with a stripped out drain plug. After evaluating the labor/cost/durability of using a helicoil or other repair method, going with rethreading and an oversized drain plug was my best solution. There are many YouTube videos showing how to do it (especially to go slow and use grease to catch any metal shavings so they don't go into the engine) with good results. It's been over a year now and the ATV is running fine with no oil related issues.

If you are looking for a set to fix a drain plug thread on your BMW (converting M12x1.5 to M13x1.5) - then you shouldn't buy this set. It will NOT work.I attached a picture which explains it all. The left plug is what you get with this set. The right plug is how it should be like. Explanation: BMWs have a full thread with a flat surface. The plug in that set will NOT go into the thread, hence will not seal it properly. Unfortunately, the listing is misleading and there is no picture which will show it to you.I saw one of the comment in here posted by a 2016 BMW X5 owner who mentioned that one day later he noticed the leak. I believe he just didn't realize that the plug was never properly sealed in the first place. You can torque to 25Nm as per the spec but it's just because the plug couldn't go further. So, fellow BMW enthusiasts - this set is not for us!

The oil plug repair kit works very well. The taps are sharp and cut precisely. The new plug provides a leak-free oil pan for original size as small as 12 mm.

The taps are great but mine came used even though I bought new, how do I know. Easy two of the taps where not in the wrappers like the rest and they had shaving and other gunk on them too. The other area they fall short in the product is that only one size of washer is provided per mm. Example I need an M15 plug but the m15 washer provided isn’t wide enough to make a good seal. The last area is no handle is provided with the kit and it’s pretty hard to find one unless it’s ordered. I used a 10 mm socket to do my threads but that’s not ideal. As far as the actual taps are concerned, they are good material and made the threads no problem. The bolts that come with the kit work well also I have no issues with the bolts.
