Have not seen water-soluble chalk pastels before. These are interesting and fun. Great if you want to blend/highlight certain areas of your art work, or just turn a sketch into a watercolor. However, a better quality of paper is a must. Range of colors are excellent, intense pigmentation, price seems fair as could not find a comparison. Would buy again.

The pastels are packaged carefully and arrived completely undamaged. While I haven’t used them yet I tested one of the sticks and it blends easily. I look forward to using them!

Charvin soft pastel set is beautifully boxed and price appropriate. Super pigmented and water soluble. Can be used dry or wet and melts beautifully with water and then acts like a watercolor! Using a fixative spray of several layers on completed project is a must.

The hard pastel sticks are good for sketching out or laying the foundation of a painting. The set has a nice variety of colors for a good price.

When I saw this set of water-soluble pastel sticks, I immediately placed an order. While waiting, I painted with my soft pastels for two whole days, but the results were so disappointing, I threw away the paintings and tried to cancel my order for the set of Charvin. Too late! The order was ready to be shipped. When it arrived today, the packaging impressed me, so I pulled out two color sticks and lightly rubbed them across some watercolor paper to see how they'd behave. Good result! Then I dampened a brush and ran it across the colors. Nice! Very nice. So I'm giving up soft pastels but keeping these hard ones - less messy and so versatile.

I am a watercolor painter and have played with hard pastels before without liking them very much... but these are awesome. They are still a little dusty like a hard dry pastel going on the page but water soaks the pigment right in and blends great. I put the pastel on a lower quality 140 lb cotton watercolor paper with enough tooth to layer the pastels. I think Im going to like working with them very much!

Firstly - would not recommend if your interest in these was for the water soluble aspect. You can't make areas of color flat by adding water, blending with water results in very muddy colors, and the pigmentation is generally weak - if you really wanted to use these with water, I'd recommend just getting a plain set of watercolors. Mixing wet on paper still leaves a very streaky, grainy look, and using heavy wet media on pastel paper generally doesn't bode well. That being said, these are alright for hard pastels, especially for a beginner. The variety of colors is pretty nice, but lacks most dark tones so if you're hoping to make a full work it'll all end up middling in tones and somewhat indistinct. They're also pretty difficult to layer without the use of additional fixative. With a bit of elbow grease you can sort of make it work, but not for a particularly professional looking result. For the hobbyist or crafter - using these in slightly more unconventional ways, not for full formal artworks - they're pretty alright, though.
