I opened the package. Thermometer is encased in a protective rubber which no doubt helps if there is a fall. The instructions don't say how to access the battery compartment . I finally got it open. You have to slide the rubber completely off and then it takes a AAA battery. It worked then so I edited my first review and gave it more stars . Get it if you don’t trust your oven which few should.

Fits in a small toaster oven and the thermometer helps make sure you're okay on temp since most ovens aren't correct. Also keeps smell down very impressively which I wasn't expecting. Highly recommend. Low price imo too. Cleans easily

The thermometer worked once then died. Don’t waste your money on cheap garbage. Get the better quality version.
