How to Plant Bare Root Strawberry Plants

Cold hardy strawberry plants and heat tolerant strawberry plants

Step 1: Check Outdoor Temperatures

If your outdoor temperatures are above 85°F or below 32°F, start your strawberries indoors for the first two weeks. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions over the course of a week before planting them outside.

Strawberry plant soil for compact soil and loose soil

Step 2: Proper Soil

Well-draining soil is extremely important! We recommend mixing at least 30% sand into a high-quality base soil.

Starting strawberry plants by planting them indoors is recommended for certain temperatures

Step 3: Starting Indoors (if needed)

In a cup or pot, plant your strawberry so that the soil reaches the base of the crown. The crown begins where the roots meet the upper portion of the plant. Burying the crown can significantly increase the risk of suffocating the plant. Firmly press the soil down around the edges of the cup or pot to encourage water runoff, and water gently. Place the pot in a sunny window and water every 3-4 days, or whenever the top 1/2 inch of soil feels dry.

How to Plant Strawberries Outdoors

Step 4: Planting Outdoors

Plant your strawberries in raised rows or mounds. As explained in Step 3, be careful not to bury the crown. Generally, strawberries should be planted 12–18 inches apart, with rows spaced 3–4 feet apart.

I planted these a few days after receiving the package and gave them a good soak per the instructions. Some crown looked like they were DOA but all of them except for one have taken right off. The seller included a couple extra in the shipment and it was surprisingly well packaged with clear instructions, plus a QR code to more detailed instructions on his website and a phone number for plant emergencies. I have already purchased other plants from this company and will gladly continue to support him given the high quality of all products so far. I'm in zone 7 and, despite the drought and wild temperature swings we continue to have, these strawberries are continuing to grow like champs. I can't wait to see their performance come spring.

Plants arrived looking healthy. I potted them up individually for overwintering in an environmentally controlled building. They were placed near windows with SE exposure. The plants did well initially, but all died eventually due to wilt.

The plants arrived in good condition and are growing well. Every plant had a small amount of greenery and received one extra plant with the order.

Out of 25 bare roots, 12 have sprouted. I was hoping for a better number to sprout. Hopefully the 12 will produce.
