They are a little small, compared to others I have owned. Apparantly designed for use on the table. I like the crank handle. I use them more for cooking. The crank allows me to get more salt/pepper quicky, enough for a recipy in the pot or pan, which is typically a lot more than a single serving on a plate.The two are identical, either or both can be for salt or pepper. The description says the grinder mechanisim is ceramic. That is good. It is corosion proof, which matters with salt. The cover is identified as stainless steel, so as to also be corosion proof. Presumably he metal rod between the cover and the grinding mechanism is also stainless steel.I has a little trouble getting the pepper grinder started. Apparanly the whole pepper corns barely fit into the grinding mechanism. It acted like it was jammed (the crank did not want to turn). But I kept working and coaxing it (I was afraid it I just forced it, I might break something). Once it got started, it works well.I like them.

it does not cost much so be glad of that is sure is a cheap made toy and is not worth it...
