About this item

  • Rectangular shape for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces
  • File tapers in width to ease access into slots
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Single-cut teeth on sides and edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring
  • Tang for use with an optional handle (sold separately)

The Pferd fine cut mill hand file has a rectangular shape and single-cut American pattern teeth on the sides and edges for rounding gullets. The file tapers slightly toward the point in width to ease access into slots. It has single-cut American pattern teeth for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Pferd manufactures abrasives and cutting tools for grinding, finishing, and cutting. The company, founded in 1799 in Germany, has its U.S. headquarters in Leominster, MA. It meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.

Seems to be high quality. Easily sharpened my lawn mower blade. It’s nice that the sides can be used too. I read many places on Reddit that this brand always delivers high quality products.

Sharpened a stainless hatchet and reprofiled a kitchen knife that had a broken tip. This did the jobs handily, and I was able to just tap the shavings out of the file after, which is great

I bought my first two 10" mill files, USA Nicholson bastard and smooth, at a local hardware store 50 years ago. Both were dead flat. After losing them in a fire, I've been trying to replace them for the past 5 years. Nicholsons are now offshored and not what they used to be. A Bahco was slightly curved over its length, as was a Grobet (slightly different pattern). Third try was the charm. This Pferd is flat, as a mill file is supposed to be. The teeth look and feel sharp and well cut. This "coarse" file looks between bastard and second cut, which is good for my purpose--leveling guitar frets. And it's reasonably priced. Thanks, Pferd!

This review is for the model rated "coarse" but this is according to German/Swiss convention so it is in reality a bit finer than a second cut file - definitely not like a bastard file coarseness. This is a step up from the best big box and hardware store brands because it is a bit sharper and lasts a big longer, but to take advantage of the improved performance and life compared to lower price files, make sure to clean the file with a card and brush after every use and keep it separated from your other files in your box so they don't bang into each other and wear down the teeth.

Fantastic file, really cuts well! I have used several other brands but I am happy I have found this one. Will buy again!

Since you can’t buy USA made files anymore this seems like the best option. I haven’t really put this to any kind of test but it seems great.

Awesome file. Does a damned good job of deburring and shaping parts. I work in a sheetmetal fab shop and always get excited when I get a chance to use my Pferd.

File in picture shows 'Made by PFERD' and has the PFERD logo etched on the file; however, the one I received has no markings whatsoever. There is no name, logo, or anything else on this file. It arrived in a plastic zipper lock bag with a label adhered to the outside of the bag. The label has the PFERD name and logo, as well as the description of the file. I just wish the actual file inside the bag had the PFERD name on it. The file appears to be correct compared to the description. I haven't used it yet to be able to comment on it's quality.
