These are just simple aluminum tubes closed on one end and open on the other, with a small raised ring around the open end. Sure you can buy cheaper no-name end caps, but these work really well, equally well on brake or shifter cables. The aluminum is soft enough that they clap well on the end of the cable, and hte opening is large enough that you never have to force a cable in. I like the fact that they are long enough that you can crimp them in two places for added security. Because it sucks when you lose one and the cable end frays. The only thing I would change is to make them available in a flip capped bottle, for ease of use in the shop. In fact, I put them in a small bottle for easier use. Some companies make flashier color anodized end caps, but silver is classy and goes with everything. I will order more when I begin to run low.

The Y62098030 cable caps come in two cellophane packages of 50 inside the box. The Shimano website calls these caps "INNER CABLE END CAP FOR SHIFTING." No dimensions or specifications on the Shimano site. I measured the cap ID and it is 1.81mm (0.071"). They are an easy fit for shifter cable at 1.2mm (0.047"). Brake cable is 1.5mm (0.059") in good condition yet varies in diameter. I tried these cable caps on an old bike of mine that has Avid Single Digit Ultimate brakes / levers with coated cable. Cable measures 1.6mm (0.063") and the cap fit loose with no issues before crimping with a Park Tool CN-10. Too bad these products do not publish the difference between trade-size and actual size. Shimano intended the caps for shifter cable yet 0.008" clearance around brake cable is a copious amount even with a cable that has issues. These cable caps are good for both sizes of cables.

I've found these to be more consistent in quality than so many others I've found on Amazon.

Great product to keep your cables neat, together, and preventing fraying of the ends

Genuine Shimano end caps are superior to most generic caps, I kid you not.I used to buy packets of cheapies but stopped that years ago. Better caps have thicker walls and they more closely fit the cable sizes. This helps to avoid crooked looking caps, diagonal cutters actually cutting into cables, or cables being mashed inside the caps. Good caps even look the part with a nice lip around where the cable enters them (also helps when handling them). Obviously it is important to differentiate between shift and brake cable sizes. Personally I always use the genuine Shimano caps for all SHIFT cables, but often use up cheap caps for brake cables depending on the bikes. If you want to nicely crimp the caps in a dedicated tool (eg. crimp part of Park CN-10) the Shimano are thicker and usually give a better result (look good and won't fall off). I usualy don't bother though. Normally I just crimp twice with a pair of side cutters. Good product. Would rate 5 stars but for their relatively high cost.

Caps are a good fit on shift cables, but will not fit on brake cables. Very consistent dimensions across all pieces, unlike some cheap no-name caps that vary quite a bit from one to the next.

These are the genuine part. If you buy a cable from Shimano it should come with one of the right size cap. But heaven help you if you drop it, the buggers are small and run off and hide. Having a package of 100 means you can search for it but it isn't the end of the world if you can't find it. (Or if you need to adjust the cable and the end cap falls off. It's easier to put a new one one than reopen the old one and resqueeze it back in place. A small wire brad nail and some patience and it can be done, but seriously my time is worth more than that and the second squeeze usually cracks the end cap. Third squeeze is right out.Recommended. Only a little more expensive than the smaller package but you get a near life time supply for the home repair person.

PROS: It is designed for bicycle cable ends (shifter or brakes). Can use pliers, electric wire crimping tool, or the expensive bicycle crimping tool. CONS: Single color.

pricier than others but I find the quality higher and more consistent. I'm just a home bike mechanic and fix friends and neighbor's bikes for free pretty much.
