The distributor looks very good, fit the engine, started and ran great several times. I have been working on this car trying to get it running correctly for years! Lived in Japan for a while, moved back and forth to Florida, I am now back in California and retired so I am working on it almost full time. Once I got the registration straightened out and insurance on it I tried to drive it further. As soon as the engine got warm, 180 degree F it began to loose power, then miss fire and back fire like a cannon! After research online I discovered I am not the only person having trouble with this distributor! The consensus is the electronics heat up and stop working. I have emailed the company twice and have not heard back. I would not buy this product!

I bought this 034EL distributor in February 3 Kuhlteck was the brand. I installed it April 7. Drove the car 8 miles in town through city streets. The vacuum diaphram failed and caused the idle to go up like an open vacuum leak. I have installed many of these distributors of the 034 design. the electronic module was fine ,I had to block the vacuum line to the carb with a bolt and limp home on it . this dizzy didn't las a half hour.

I ordered a vacuum advance unit but the first delivery was a centrifugal advance unit packaged in a vacuum advance box. Amazon did an outstanding job getting the correct item to me, without charge, practically immediately upon my request for return. The replacement item was correct and installed easily using the O-ring from my original distributor. You will need to relocate the spark plug wires so note the position of #1 TDC before removing the existing distributor, then reposition the plug wires on the Kühltek unit to match once it is set in place. Timing can be set statically or with a strobe timing light. Performance with the Kühltek vacuum advance unit is good with quick starts, smooth idle and this unit has definitely minimized the flat spot. I drove my 1600cc single port 350 miles on the interstate and the engine ran smoothly at highway speed and accelerated smoothly. Oil temperatures were the same as with the original distributor. One issue arose almost immediately upon installation: I am now experiencing random hot start issues where the engine will not start when hot. I haven't been able to isolate the issue to the distributor but it never happened with the old points/condenser unit. After about a 20 minute cool down it starts and runs fine. Will continue to monitor.Update June 13, 2018: After one year and approximately 1000 miles of driving, this unit remains problematic. The hot start problem grew into a "no start" when hot. I removed the Kuhltek unit and replaced it with the stock VW vacuum advance unit and the engine ran perfectly. Upon inspection of the Kuhltek distributor, I found the vacuum advance canister had failed (would not hold any vacuum) which would account for the hot start problem. The vacuum advance canister mounting tabs on the Kuhltek distributor are drilled differently from the stock canister so a direct swap out is not possible.Bottom line: This product is good in concept, but the unpredictable quality of the components makes the unit unreliable. I now have purchased two of these units and have one installed in my stock 1600cc Karmann Ghia. So far, no issues, but, I will always carry a spare traditional points/condenser distributor. This is unfortunate because when all is well, this unit performs well, eliminates the hesitation problem and should deliver a long service life.Kuhltek could do themselves a great service and protect their reputation during these early production periods by monitoring these comments and reaching out to their customers like some of the other Amazon suppliers do. I would like to return this item to them for their own post-mortem analysis, but I don't know how to contact them directly. I hope this helps.

This is the second Kuhltek I've ordered this year. The first had a vacuum advance unit that was leaking air. Took forever to find. So far, no replacement vacuum unit can be found....... The second one had the pickup on the advance plate rubbing against a screw. Fixed that & found the timing was erratic once the car warmed up. The weights end up binding as the metal expands! Poor quality control & workmanship. Save your money & get a decent distributor for a few dollars more.
